Blakedean Scout Hostel Sleeps 24 in bunk bed accommodation

The hostel is situated in the Pennine Hills, on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire (seven miles from Hebden Bridge and ten miles from Todmorden). Blakedean Hostel is owned by the Pennine Calder Scout District. Forty years ago it was converted from a nonconformist chapel Sunday School.

The centrally heated building has been renovated specifically to suit youth groups and sleeps 24 in bunk bed accommodation. Overlooking a local beauty spot where moorland streams meet, the scope for activities on the adjacent moors is endless.

About

History enthusiasts will be rewarded by web searches for “Blakedean Baptist Chapel”, “The Green Lady of Blakedean” and “Blakedean Railway” – which reveal many interesting tales.

The Pennine Way footpath is only minutes from the door and offers superb walks over the moors. A pleasant hike northwards along the Pennine Way over Stanbury Moor takes you past Top Withens (“Wuthering Heights” in Emily Bronte’s Novel) and on to Haworth Village, home of the Bronte family and the Worth Valley steam railway.

Suitable for: mountain biking, incident hikes, rock climbing, hiking, geo-caching, river games, wide games, river walks, bird watching, nature and bivouacing.

Not suitable for late-night parties.

Facilities

The large common room is fitted with a wood-burning stove, which gives the room a focal point for cosy evenings in front of the fire (n.b. you would need to supply your own wood for the fire).

There is a kitchen area housing an oven hob, bain mane, microwave, toaster, fridge freezer and equipment to cook and serve basic meals for 24 people.

The ground floor toilet block has separate male/female toilets and washrooms with a large adjoining shower room. Upstairs the sleeping accommodation consists of two dormitories sleeping ten in each and two leaders rooms.

Heating is provided by an oil-fired boiler working on a timer. This also heats the water. Electricity is on a meter so bring £1 coins for this.

Out and about the property has a large grassed area suitable for ball games, a campfire area, an assembly yard and a car park with additional parking opposite. The campsite is suitable for the D of E Award.

There is a boot room with storage for walking boots, coats etc.

There is no mobile phone reception at the hostel – there is a payphone in the hostel.
